Now more than ever in these uncertain times, we need to come together as a church community to help others. Please prayerfully consider these opportunities:
BREAKING BREAD WITH THE HUNGRY WILL RESUME ON Friday, October 2, 2020
Dear Breaking Bread with the Hungry Family,
We are happy to announce that we have been given permission to re-start our Friday night dinners at St. Vincent de Paul Church on a grab-and-go basis. Our target start date is Friday, October 2nd. We anticipate providing a large lunch bag of food and bags of non-perishable groceries. (SEE INFORMATION ABOUT GRAB-AND-GO LUNCHES ON OUR SIGN-UP GENIUS PAGE)
Because we will be returning to our weekly dinners, we will no longer be collecting non-perishable food and toiletries for the Franciscan Center. The staff at the Franciscan Center has expressed their gratitude for the incredible generosity shown by Breaking Bread with the Hungry during the first 6 months of the pandemic, writing: “Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! It has been an incredible ride these past 6 months and your efforts and contributions have made a tremendous impact on those we serve here at the Franciscan Center.” We will join with the Franciscan Center on future projects to support our neighbors living unsheltered and in poverty.
Casseroles for Our Daily Bread will continue to be collected in the freezer at Our Lady of the Fields. If you have any questions about the casserole collection, please contact Mary O’Malley at firstname.lastname@example.org.
At our last collection for the Franciscan Center, we had a tremendous outpouring of support, especially in donations of school supplies for the students at Dallas Nicholas Elementary School. The Franciscan Center teamed up with the school and hosted a back-to-school cookout event. Thanks to your generosity, backpacks were filled with appropriate supplies for each grade. Students and their families were invited to drop by the school playground, select a backpack, meet their teachers, get a free back-to-school haircut, and take home a boxed lunch lovingly prepared by Chef Steve and his awesome staff. The Franciscan Center staff also reached out to families experiencing housing and food insecurity. As you might recall, about 30 percent of students at the school experience some form of homelessness, living in their cars, in shelters, and couch-surfing. A couple of photos of the back-to-school event are attached.
Many, many hands made our six months of collections for the Franciscan Center successful, but I’d like to give special recognition to those who, week after week, set up, organized and boxed the food, and delivered the donations to both the Franciscan Center and Our Daily Bread. THANK YOU! Msgr. Jay, Mary O’Malley, James Thomas, Shirley Sciortino, Emily Sciortino, Julie Sciortino, Fr. Matt, Catherine and Paul Gonzalez, Lynn Watts, Lori and Ken Pagnanelli, Liz and Garry Spears, Mary Giblin, and Cathy and Jim Gallagher.
We also extend a warm welcome to Fr. Jack Ward, the new Pastor at Our Lady of the Fields. Please pray for the success of his ministry. Prayers are also requested for Fr. Ray Chase, the Pastor at St. Vincent de Paul, who will be having surgery for prostate cancer on October 14th. His prognosis is very good, but he will have a long recovery, so keep those prayers coming.
